your life is your life
don’t let it be clubbed into dank submission.
be on the watch.
there are ways out.
there is light somewhere.
it may not be much light but
it beats the darkness.
be on the watch.
the gods will offer you chances.
know them.
take them.
you can’t beat death but
you can beat death in life, sometimes.
and the more often you learn to do it,
the more light there will be.
your life is your life.
know it while you have it.
you are marvelous
the gods wait to delight
in you.

Charles Bukowski

Bukowski, who would have celebrated his hundredth birthday this past week, here expresses plainly yet potently, an important acknowledgement of life: to live one. While the world may feel paused, the arrow of time, the measure of a life, continues to fly.

Alan Sachs said “Death is more universal than Life; everyone dies but not everyone lives” and for each of us, death is an inevitability, but living a full life, to rise above the pervasive darkness that creeps into our minds and hearts, is for us to choose.

As a bonus — here’s Tom Waits reciting The Laughing Heart.
